IKEA PAX HACK - Things to Consider

The 'IKEA PAX HACK' is an ever growing 'trend'. With it being a cheaper alternative to the luxe built in wardrobe aesthetic, I can see why it's becoming more popular.

Look out for our full blog detailing steps on how you can create your own DIY, built-in wardrobe using IKEA PAX.

For now, here are a few things you need to consider when hopping onto the PAX HACK trend....

1 - Your Space

IKEA Pax are famous for their 'two sizes fit all' range. Most modern homes have lower ceiling and therefore require the 201cm tall wardrobe frames, which often leave a large gap to the ceiling - hence the need for the Pax Hack.

Older buildings may have taller ceilings, in which the 236cm frames are able to fit; sometimes even flush to the ceiling. It's important to measure accurately to see which is most suitable for your space.

*Note - These are an estimate too. We found our ceiling heights to be 239cm tall. We tried (and failed) to fit the 236cm frames, and granted, we didn't leave much room for error!

2 - Level Surface

The type of surface beneath your IKEA frames is important. If your frames don't sit level, you're doors; 'Pax Hack' shelves, and everything else will sit wonky.

If you're up for the job, your floor boards and joists can be levelled out. You may ask why this technique is even mentioned? Well, it leaves more room for your additional shelves added during the Pax Hack method. We, personally, wanted to maximise the additional storage space, and therefore took the hit on the not-so-pleasant job!

A quicker technique (good for concrete flooring too) is to add a base to your frames. By raising the IKEA Pax frames off the floor using crates or a stud-frame, it means you are able to easily level the base, rather than worry about levelling the floor.

I've seen many people use this method when building in their IKEA frames as a solution! See our IKEA PAX HACK full blog for more information on how you can do this!

3 - Storage Lover?

As mentioned before, we wanted to maximise the storage shelving that was added above the IKEA frames. However, for those less confident at DIY, storage doesn't have to be the option.

An easier alternative to building shelving is to, again, raise the frames. If the frames are raised equally to the gap left above them, it is possible to conceal the gap (above and below) using a trim. This way, you get the built in look, with minimal woodwork!

Of course this method requires you to take the hit on the storage, but for many, storage isn't such an added bonus anyway... especially if you're saving thousands building it yourself!

What now?

These are only a few things to get you thinking. Luckily, IKEA Pax allow you to easily model the frames and interiors on the website, making it super easy to organise.

When planning any additional storage, trims or other 'Pax Hack' alternatives, there's a lot to factor into making sure your wardrobes are built in successfully!
